Black Tea

Black tea is one of the most widely consumed teas in the world and is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. What makes black tea unique among tea varieties is its full oxidation, a natural process that develops the tea’s dark color, bold flavor, and rich aroma.

During oxidation, the tea leaves react with oxygen after they are rolled and exposed to air. This process transforms the chemical composition of the leaves, creating the deep amber infusion and complex flavors that black tea is known for.

The production of black tea follows several traditional steps that influence its final flavor and quality.

1. Withering
Freshly harvested tea leaves are spread out to reduce moisture and soften the leaves. This step prepares them for shaping and oxidation.

2. Rolling or Shaping
The leaves are rolled or twisted to break the cell walls and release natural oils and enzymes that contribute to the tea’s flavor.

3. Oxidation
The leaves are exposed to air, allowing oxidation to occur. This stage darkens the leaves and develops the characteristic flavor and aroma of black tea.

4. Drying
Finally, the leaves are heated or dried to stop oxidation and lock in their flavor.

Types of Black Tea

Black tea is produced in many tea-growing regions, each offering distinct flavor profiles influenced by climate, soil, and traditional processing methods.

Darjeeling Tea (India)
