China Breakfast

A traditional blend of Chinese black teas offering a smooth, medium-bodied cup with notes of cocoa, dried fruit and a subtle smokiness. Less brisk than English Breakfast and naturally sweet, it is an elegant everyday tea that can be enjoyed plain.

This smooth, rounded blend draws from China's most celebrated black tea regions with its signature winey depth and subtle cocoa undertone. Where its Western descendants tend toward boldness and brisk astringency, China Breakfast is something quieter and more considered. Medium-bodied, smooth and low in tannins, it asks nothing more, no milk to soften it, no sugar to balance it. It simply unfolds dark dried fruit, a rounded earthiness, the faintest thread of woodsmoke.

This is tea as the Chinese always meant it to be drunk — honest, unfussy and quietly extraordinary. A morning cup without the bite, no astringency to wrestle with — just a tea that opens the day gently and well.

Note: Smooth Chinese black teas create a naturally sweet, refreshing iced tea without the bitterness often found in traditional breakfast blends. Our China Breakfast makes an excellent iced tea because it's less tannic than Assam-heavy breakfast blends, naturally sweet, smooth when chilled and has virtually no bitterness, even when brewed a little stronger. It's delicious in a cold brew - no clouding, no surface film, no staining. Just a clean, golden cup that's as good over ice as it is hot.

China Breakfast is great for an iced tea. Low tannins + no astringency is exactly what works for iced tea — cold temperatures amplify bitterness and astringency, which is why a lot of black teas taste harsh or metallic when iced. China Breakfast won't do that.

The fruit and earthy notes hold up beautifully cold. China Breakfast's winey, dark-fruit character especially tends to deepen rather than flatten when chilled.

Medium body means it won't taste thin and watery over ice the way lighter teas sometimes do, but it also won't be heavy or syrupy.

Cold brew would be particularly good with this one — 8–12 hours in the fridge, no heat at all, which pulls even less tannin and lets the natural sweetness and fruit come forward. The result would be remarkably smooth and complex for an unsweetened iced tea.

The smoke note, faint as it is adds intrigue rather than dominating.

Enjoy it cold, especially in the summer.
