Japanese Houjicha ( Roasted Green Tea )

Houjicha is a traditional Japanese green tea roasted at high temperatures, giving it a distinct reddish-brown color and a comforting, toasty aroma. Though it looks like black tea, Houjicha is actually made from unoxidized green tea leaves that are roasted at around 200°C and then quickly cooled.

This roasting process lowers both caffeine and catechin content, reducing bitterness and astringency while creating a smooth, nutty, and easy-to-drink tea. Thanks to its low caffeine, Houjicha is a popular choice in Japan for all ages, including children and the elderly.

Rich in L-theanine, Houjicha may support relaxation and mental clarity without the stimulation of other green teas. Its gentle profile also makes it easier on the stomach, making it ideal for sensitive tea drinkers.

Delicious hot or iced! Houjicha’s smooth, roasted flavor shines when cold-brewed or poured over ice, making it a refreshing and calming option year-round.

The Unique Story of Hōjicha: Japan’s Roasted Green Tea

Unlike most green teas known for their grassy notes and bright green liquor, Hōjicha stands out with its warm, toasty flavor and reddish-brown color. Originating in Kyoto, Japan in the 1920s, Hōjicha was created when a tea merchant began roasting leftover bancha leaves over charcoal — transforming them into a completely new kind of green tea.

The resulting tea is smooth, nutty, and low in caffeine, with none of the bitterness typical of stronger green teas. Roasting the leaves reduces their catechin and caffeine content, making Hōjicha ideal for evening tea, tea for kids, and those with sensitive stomachs.

Today, Hōjicha is one of the most popular low-caffeine Japanese teas, often enjoyed hot or cold and even used in lattes and desserts. It’s a favorite for those looking to switch from coffee, or for tea lovers who want the cozy flavor of roasted tea with the health benefits of green tea.
