Anise Seed

Anise seed is a very sweet and aromatic spice with a strong licorice-like flavor and scent. The sweetness of anise is similar to star anise, fennel and licorice. Anise seeds are referred to as a carminative, which is a herb or preparation that either prevents formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract or helps expulsion of gas from the digestive tract.
Anise is used to add flavor in a vast variety of dishes around the world, like French carrot dishes, East Indian curries, Hispanic stews, and Scandinavian breads. It is also well known for its applications in confectionery, like biscuits, cakes and sweets, as well as alcoholic beverages like French anisette, Greek ouzo, Middle Eastern arrack, Italian sambuca.
The essential oil made from anise seed is used to flavor licorice candy. Anise can beautifully balance the flavors of bay leaf and cinnamon. Used in tea, it adds a nice sweet taste, aids digestion and promotes relaxation.
