7 healthy reasons to add chicory root to your day

The chicory plant has a long history of use as a food item, and as a healing herb. Native to the Mediterranean, when cultivated, the leaves make a wonderful salad. The leaves of the chicory plant can be cultivated as radicchio, sugarloaf or Belgian endive. The root may be roasted until it develops a rich, nutty, woodsy aroma, reminiscent of roasted coffee. A small amount creates a strong brew, which is one of the reasons this herb is a popular coffee substitute or addition. At Shanti Tea, we sell straight chicory root and in an energizing blend called Spirit, with herbs known to boost energy, some of which are caffeinated, some are not.
