COVID-19 Update

With growing concerns around COVID-19 (“coronavirus”), we wanted to provide you with an update on the measures we are taking to keep our team and customers safe and well.

As an organic manufacturing facility, we already follow strict food safety, sanitation and cleaning protocols, and in addition to this, our warehouse has been closed to the public, accessible only to a small team who are following all advice given by Canada Public Health.

Shanti will continue to fulfil orders as long as we are able to conduct business in line with government recommendations. As of the announcement on March 24, we are deemed an essential service.

The only thing we ask for is some patience as we work out the impact COVID-19 will have on our supply chain, which may cause delays to your orders. We will update you on order progress as much as information is available to us and please do contact us if you have any questions on current or forecast orders. In addition to supporting our current suppliers we are also exploring new relationships to minimize disruptions and access to our products.

Our commitment to you is that we will continue to supply you with safe and high quality products and will keep you updated of any changes in service. Shanti Teabag Material

Shanti pyramid tea bags are made from a plant-based material called polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is an inert, DNA and GMO free material that is produced by breaking down starches found in plant sources such as corn. These starches are broken down into pure lactic acid, and then polymerized through enzymatic activity into long chains of PLA fiber.

PLA-KNIT tea filter material is made by forming PLA fibers into a mesh fabric. We receive the rolls of PLA mesh fabric, and transforms them into pyramid-shaped, whole leaf tea sachets in our tea manufacturing facility.

PLA is used in a wide variety of food products because it is derived from renewable plant sources and is biodegradable in the long term. The conditions under which PLA biodegrades depend on the form that the PLA takes. Our PLA tea bags are designed to biodegrade in commercial quality composting systems, when conditions achieve at least 120°F, and 80% relative humidity. When these conditions are met and held constant, our PLA tea bags will biodegrade over a period of about two months.

Shanti tea bags have a cotton string and printed-paper tag, which is attached to the PLA mesh using ultrasonic vibrational technology. This process instantly fuses the string to the mesh. The same technique is used when the rolled PLA mesh is spun into a pyramid shape, filled with whole leaf tea, and sealed during production on our tea bagging machine at our manufacturing facility.

What is your Return Policy?

Your satisfaction is important to us, any unopened and unused products may be returned within 14 days from the time you received it. All products must be returned in the original packaging.

How do I return something?

Please contact our customer service team by email info@shantitea.ca to start the return process. To ensure that your returns are handled quickly and effectively, please provide:

  • Order number
  • Invoice number
  • A brief reason for the return

What can’t I return?

Most of our products can be returned, with a few exceptions:

  • Sample sizes including our ‘Sampler Packs Collections’ are not eligible for return. (The cost associated with their return or exchange would outweigh their value).
  • Opened products that are not defective. We offer sample sizes of every product we carry and advise trying a sample before buying larger quantities.
  • Custom Blends (we can’t restock something that has been created just for you).
  • Special order items, custom sourced ingredients, teabag fabric and labels are non-refundable.

What happens if my order is damaged, incorrect or incomplete?

We go to great lengths to ensure that your order is correct, properly packaged and well protected. Despite our best efforts, human error or damage during transit is still possible. If any of your items are incorrect or damaged, please email us immediately so that we can assist you. All damaged, incorrect or incomplete items must be reported within 14 days from the date of reception.

What happens if I change my mind after ordering?

We understand that sometimes an order needs to be canceled due to mistake or change of heart.

  • If you need to cancel your order as we are low or out of stock, product is, a full refund or credit for the price of the product will be provided.
  • If the cancellation occurs before we have packed the order, a full refund or credit can be provided.
  • If the order has already been packed, a restocking fee of 15% of the total order applies.

How will I be refunded?

When submitting the return, you are able to choose whether you'd like to receive a gift certificate or refund to your original method of payment. Please note that refunds may take up to three business days to process, depending on your bank or card institution.

What if I find an insect in my tea?

Insects and Organic Products

Shanti is 100% organic and as such no pesticides are used in any of our products, which means tea, herbs and spices can be subject to insect infestation.

Shanti implements several control methods to ensure that every botanical item shipped from our warehouse is free of pests but with tricky things like heat and other factors, sometimes this is out of our control.

Shanti Tea will offer a full refund for any items which are found to contain pests within 30 days, so please inspect your product(s) upon receipt. Any items found with pests after this period of time will become sole responsibility of the purchaser. Refunds are only available for the dollar value of the merchandise and we are not be liable for any other expenses incurred as a result of infestation. We’re sorry we can’t help more, but outside of the 30 day period we can’t trace back the issue.

Should this unfortunate situation happen, freeze the items immediately at a temperature of 10 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit ( -1 to -10 degrees Celsius) to limit the exposure and contact us.

Is Shanti Tea nut-free?

The short answer is no. We take many precautions to ensure our facility is free of peanuts. However, we import teas and herbs from farms in countries where peanut-free facilities do not exist. We also manufacture teas with tree nuts and seeds. For these reasons it is impossible for us to guarantee that our products have never come into contact with peanuts.

Tree nuts and seeds used in some of our blends include:

  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Walnuts

How do I track my shipment?

Once your order is packed and out the door we'll send you an email with your tracking number. If you haven't received an email from us, start by checking your junk mail. What are “Natural Essences”?

All of our natural essences are organic compliant and chemical-free! They are also vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free (except for maple teas) and dairy-free. Essences are made with an ethyl alcohol base and the addition of essences found in natural ingredients. We have essences custom manufactured to ensure the best taste! The exact recipes are trade secrets but our organic certifiers are privy to ingredients and can assure that the natural essences meet all organic requirements. These are not essential oils as many often wonder, essential oils are not suitable for tea application.

What’s the process to get my own private label tea?

The process to get private labelled tea is very simple, actually:

Step 1 : Select the format for the tea: Teabags, or Loose Leaf Tea?
Step 2 : Choose a tea from our collection, or ask us to create a custom blend just for you.
Step 3 : Choose an existing packaging style (Tins or Pouches) or ask us about custom packaging options.
Step 4 : Decide whether or not you want to have the "Certified Organic" seal registered for your brand.
Step 5 : Design your label, or have us design your label.

That's it!  Here is a bit more information about each step:

Step 1: Tea Format
Selecting the format for your tea is pretty straight forward.  Teabags are a great choice in environments where a tea infuser is not always available, or if speed of service if important.  Teabags are also very convenient at home or at work because there is no infuser to wash or carry around with you.  Loose-leaf tea, on the other hand, is generally regarded by the public as being of higher quality and more luxurious than teabags.  It is also less expensive than teabags and uses significantly less packaging and manufacturing effort, thus being a more eco-friendly product.  In addition, the manufacture of private label loose-leaf tea is much faster than the manufacture of teabags, so if time is a factor in your process then loose-leaf tea might be the best option.

Step 2: Select Your Tea(s)
If you select a tea that is already part of our regular collection, then the minimums for private label are lower, and you can move on to the next step.  If you want us to create a custom tea for you that is not part of our collection, the minimum order is 5kg per custom blend. For custom blends, the first step is to ensure you have a wholesale account. Next, you would order our custom blending service for each of the blends that you require (this can be found on the Wholesale Tools page that is accessible only after you have a wholesale account). At this point, you will be working closely with an account manager who will begin the process of designing your tea.  We typically send you between 1 to 3 samples of each custom blend for your consideration.  You may either pick one of the samples or you may make suggestions for improvement.  If you select your tea form the samples, then we can move on to the next step.  If you ask for revisions, then we send you new samples based on your revisions.  Note that there is a service and shipping charge of $20 per revision but it is very rare that revisions are required. 

Step 3: Choose Your Packaging Style
Our standard and readily-available packaging are silver tea tins, and stand-up zipper tea pouches.  The tea tins are about 2.5" in diameter and 6" tall, while the standard pouch size is about 5" wide by 7" tall.  They both hold between 50g and 100g of tea, depending on the type and density of tea selected.  We can work with you to develop a new packaging style - you can discuss these details with your account manager.

Step 4: Certified Organic Tea
As most of our products are Certified Organic, you may ask us to register your brand and your tea as a certified organic tea.  This will give you the option of placing the Canada Organic or USDA organic logo on your label.  The cost to register your brand as a certified organic tea under our license is $150.00 per year.  The cost applies to your brand - whether you have 1 tea or 100 teas under your brand, the cost remains the same.  However, additional brands require additional yearly registration charges.

Step 5: Design Your Label
The last step is to design your label. You may design the label yourself, or ask us to design your label for you. If you design the label yourself, you will be provided basic templates that your designer can use to format your label dimensions correctly. If you want us to design your label for you, we will ask you for some information and provide a quote. Once the above 5 steps are completed, we will assemble your private label product and ship it to you as soon as it is ready. That's all there is to it!.

Do you sell wholesale to cafes and restaurants?

We’re happy to offer our retail customers all of our premium socially and environmentally conscious teas at very competitive wholesale prices. Do you deliver to the US?

Yes we do – however extra shipping charges will apply for shipments off the Mainland USA.

Which tea should I start with?

If you’ve never had tea before, then at least you’re starting off on the right foot by searching for loose leaf tea rather than tea sold in tea bags at your grocery store. the quality, taste, and health benefits of loose leaf tea are far superior to the dust and fannings that are packed into standard tea bags these days. If you are a coffee drinker, I would recommend you start with a black tea, perhaps a Strong Assam if you like a strong morning drink, or a Darjeeling Black for a slightly lighter cup. If you are not a stranger to teas, then I might recommend our Oolongs such as the Wuyi Rock Oolong or the Iron Goddess, which have a remarkable flavor. If you don’t like to add milk to your tea, then look into the Greens, the whites, or the Oolongs. If you prefer a drink with no caffeine, we have a selection of caffeine free Herbal teas which are simply delicious.

What types of payment do you accept?

We accept Mastercard, Visa, Debit Visa and Paypal. We also accept American Express payment through Paypal (no Paypal account required). Our wholesale customers can request to pay by email money transfer. We never store your credit card information on our servers. All transactions go through our secure merchant services provider. If you prefer, you can also make a credit card payment by phone. For businesses, in addition to the above payment methods, we also accept business cheques, electronic fund transfers and email money transfers. Your order will ship once your cheque has cleared or your bank transfer has been received.

How do I place an order?

The easiest way to place an order is to create an account on our website and use the online shopping cart. Retail orders are usually shipped within 2 business days form our Ottawa warehouse, while wholesale orders make take more time, depending on the size of the order - your account manager will keep you up to date on your order status.  If you do not receive an e-mail confirmation that your order has shipped within 2 business days of placing your order, you may contact us to confirm the status of your order.
